World Health Organization May Recognize "Gaming Disorder" in 2018

Instances of addiction to playing video games are on the rise to such a degree that the World Health Organization is adding "gaming disorder" to its global classification of diseases in 2018.

Manifestations might appear, and these consist in the powerlessness and incapability to show control when it comes to how to play computer games and for how long it takes.

Sufferers are said to be unable to control the onset, frequency, intensity, duration, termination, and context are their gaming habit and give increasing priority to playing games over other life interests and daily activities. "Disorders due to addictive behaviors include gambling disorder and gaming disorder, which may involve both online and offline behavior". The mental disorder associated with video gaming must be evident for 12 months, less if the symptoms are severe. The disorder, World Health Organization says, is manifested by impaired control over gaming and an increasing priority given to gaming ─ "to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities".

The WHO also points out that anyone with gaming disorder can't stop themselves from playing. In 2013, The American Psychiatric Association (APA) considered "internet gaming disorder" as an entry in its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, and listed it in its Conditions for Further Study section.

A final decision on including "gaming disorder" as a mental health disorder has not been made. Gamers believe that video gaming is akin to hobbies or professions.

In the ICD-11, the description of what makes a gaming disorder a form of addictive behavior is similar to what's listed for a gambling addiction. Signs include gaming getting in the way of a job, school, or spending time with family and friends.
