Talking of its technology, Energous stated that the transmitter converts the electricity in radio frequencies, and then directs the energy to the surrounding devices, which are fitted with a corresponding receiver.

The company said this was the first FCC approval for remote wireless charging, and its stock (watt) shot up almost 100% in the hours after the announcement. Those rules allow for higher-power operations than the Part 15 rules used to approve other long distance charging devices. It can charge a mobile phone fitness tracker, Bluetooth speaker, earbuds, etc. The FCC approval does overcome the last legal hurdle to WattUp's adoption but that doesn't immediately translate to actual products using it. Energous may have missed its chance with the iPhone 8, which was initially rumored to support the technology. Unlike other wireless charging systems, this system will allow users to charge their phone's battery from as far as 3 feet away.

Energous released a video demonstrating this WattUp mechanism. It's crucially distinct from systems that can only charge devices when the devices are in contact with charging pads. It opens up options, outside of just contact-based charging, to Wireless Charging 2.0: "an ecosystem where devices can be charged both, via pad and at a distance", said Stephen R. Rizzone, president and CEO of Energous. The transmitter has been approved by FCC (Federal Communications Commission), an agency which regulates all laws and licenses for interstate communication in USA, and will be showcased at the upcoming CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2018 in Las Vegas on 9-12 January.
