Lorde axes Israel shows amid tensions over Jerusalem recognition

Lorde Cancels Upcoming Concert in Tel Aviv: 'I Didn't Make the Right Call on This One'

Amid the pressure from anti-Israel groups, New Zealand pop singer Lorde canceled on Sunday her summer concert in Israel.

The Jerusalem rally on Saturday night was created to draw those who wanted to express their anger about government corruption but felt uncomfortable demonstrating with mostly left-wing supporters in Tel Aviv alongside signs that called for an end to the occupation or that expressed support for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel.

They protested government corruption and demanded the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who is under investigation in a number of cases. As part of this struggle, we believe that an economic, intellectual and artistic boycott is an effective way of speaking out against these crimes.

New Zealanders Nadia Abu-Shanab and Justine Sachs - respectively, Palestinian and Jewish - wrote an open letter on Thursday on the website, The Spinoff, saying that Lorde's scheduled performance in Israel "sends the wrong message". "This worked very effectively against apartheid in South Africa, and we hope it can work again". The UN General Assembly also denounced the move. Before she thanked her fans for "educating" her, she said that she has been discussing the matter with people and is "considering all options".

His conviction remains in place and he will be under a term of supervised release and a major restitution obligation despite being released from prison.

The promoter said Lorde would announce it to her fans on Twitter soon.

These boycotts are nothing new, with musician Elvis Costello having previously pulled out of a concert in Israel back in 2010.

Artists who have participated in the cultural boycott of Israel through the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement include Brian Eno and Pink Floyd's Roger Waters, writers Arundhati Roy and Eduardo Galeano and film-maker Ken Loach.

While calls for boycotts are frequent, scores of acts still play Tel Aviv, including just in recent months artists like Radiohead, Cliff Richard, Future, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Take That and Bryan Adams.
