Police shoot knife-wielding man at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport

Schiphol airport shooting

Airport spokesman Roos van der Ven said Schiphol Plaza, which houses stores, bars and restaurants, was evacuated, but not the parts of the airport behind the check-in area and security checks.

The incident has had no impact on air traffic, said the Schiphol spokesperson.

"Man shot by the military police at Schiphol Airport after he threatened [people] with a knife", the force said on Twitter.

GUNSHOTS can be heard ringing out across Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport in chilling video of the moment armed cops shot a knifeman threatening to stab holidaymakers.

"After he threatened them, my colleagues took out their guns and shot him in his leg", Muller said, adding the man had been taken to hospital for treatment.

Opened in 1916 as a military airport, Schiphol became the country's primary airport in 1949, lying just about nine kilometers (five miles) southwest of Amsterdam.

He said "the circumstances are telling us that it has nothing to do with terrorism".

There are no further details about the suspect or his motives as yet.

But the airport tweeted later that the plaza was "reopened to the public again".

No other injuries were reported.

The shocking footage from the scene shows armed cops rushing through the airport to apprehend the armed man, as the building was placed on lockdown.
