This feature may give Vivo the 'edge' over Samsung

The ultimate advantage of opting for in-display sensors would be the let manufacturers bring more full-screen smartphones in the coming future, complete with the ease of a front-facing fingerprint sensor.

While Vivo might not be the first name people think of when it comes to top 5 phone manufacturers, IDC reports that it was behind only Samsung, Apple, Huawei, and OPPO in Q1 2017.

Earlier this week, biometrics company Synaptics announced the development of Clear FS9500, the "world's first in-display fingerprint sensor for smartphones". With rumors suggesting that Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S9 will keep the fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone and Apple unlikely to roll out an iPhone X successor until the fall, Vivo seems like it will beat other smartphone makers to the punch with a sensor embedded right into the phone's screen. In order for it to work, the finger has to be illuminated, so that the fingerprint scanner can read the reflections of the finger scan.

The Synaptics Clear ID fingerprint scanner will be able to work on any smartphone with OLED displays and it will only activate when it's needed. Synaptics, in fact, claims its Clear ID is twice as fast as Apple's Face ID. The technology that Synaptics has come out with, aka Clear ID, is said to be fast and simple.

Vivo isn't particularly well-known in Western markets, but is popular in India as the fourth-biggest smartphone maker and holds a similar position in China.

In-screen fingerprint sensors have been considered as a natural evolution of modern biometric sensors as the smartphone displays this year moved to an edge-to-edge concept.

The Vivo announcement is a surprise for another reason, too: When Qualcomm announced that it had developed pioneering in-display fingerprint sensor technology at Mobile World Congress Shanghai, it showcased the technology in a modified Vivo device. Better yet, it still functions with the same security and dependability as a conventional fingerprint sensor, meaning it can be used not just for unlocking, but payments as well. Earlier in the year, Qualcomm revealed to Digital Trends that it expected in-screen fingerprint sensors to launch in consumer products beginning in summer 2018.
