Hurricane Irma, Matt Lauer and the late singer Tom Petty were the top three lookups that caused the most traffic spikes in the US this year, according to Google's annual list of the top trending searches for 2017.

It wouldn't be Ireland if we weren't obsessing about the weather and a second hurricane makes an appearance in the top 10 most searched for terms.

Lauer was sacked on November 29 from NBC News following a secret meeting where his alleged victim and her lawyer told NBC brass her story of inappropriate sexual behavior from the "Today" show host.

When it came to "how to cook" searches, Aussies were most interested in tofu, eggplant and pasta.

2017 was a wild ride in the sports world, and Google Trends was quick to pick up on the biggest roller coasters in sports.

The search giant has found that Australian Open in January was the most investigated topic in the country in 2017. Globally, Matt Lauer was the most searched person, followed by Meghan Markle, Nadia Toffa, Harvey Weinstein, and Kevin Spacey.

America's top Google searches have one thing in common: bad news. Chicken breast recipes were the most searched recipes in the world, beating out ground beef recipes, and more people asked Google how to make slime than how to make solar eclipse glasses. Top global searches includes a natural disaster, the latest phones, celebrities, TV shows, and more. The question was also the most searched for around the world in 2017. It is followed by iPhone X in the second position, video game console Nintendo Switch in the third, Samsung Galaxy S8 in the fourth and Xbox One X in the fifth position.

Last year's most searched terms included Prince, Powerball and Hillary Clinton, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
