Parliamentary panel upset at pre-censor screening of Padmavati

Salman Khan Sanjay Leela Bhansali

The members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on IT asked many questions to Bhansali who appeared before the panel alongside Prasoon Joshi, who heads the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

Other panel members reportedly grilled Bhansali, and said his movies tend to target communities and produced tension between them, NDTV reported.

Sources said Joshi told the Committee that he had appointed a panel of experts to examine the film and provide inputs to the CBFC. "The censor board or the Supreme Court will take a decision and everyone should respect that". "But while I do not know how the characters are portrayed and I can tell Sanjay (Bhansali) only after watching the film, I strongly condemn threats of violence [issued by fringe groups] against Deepika Padukone and him", said Mr. Patekar, speaking on the sidelines of the passing out parade of the 133rd course of the National Defence Academy (NDA), where the actor was invited as a special guest.

"All the controversy over the film is based on rumours".

Sources said the members asked Bhansali, "How could you assume that the movie could be released on December 1 when you applied to the CBFC on November 11. I gave him two hits - "Khamoshi" and "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" and he took Shah Rukh in the next one (Devdas)", he joked. The CBFC chief appeared before the petition's panel that also took up the film for discussion and its chair C P Joshi, who is also from BJP, is understood to have noted that Bhansali had failed to take cognisance of the faith and reverence in the figure of Padmavati.

Advani, however, intervened and told the panel that a cross-examination of Bhansali was not on the agenda, The Hindu quoted a committee member as saying. Now, it has up to two months to decide on the movie after a multi-level process.

BJP MP from Chittorgarh, CP Joshi asked, "We have asked for a ban on Padmavati". Later, Thakur said in a statement: "A movie is meant for entertainment, not for creating a tensed atmosphere across the country". The TMC, specifically, has raised objections over people commenting on the film without seeing it. The 51-year-old answered the questions on the ongoing controversy of Padmavati quite cleverly and diplomatically.
