Ole Miss get 2-year bowl ban, other penalties in NCAA case

This has been a long and winding road for Ole Miss, which included former coach Houston Nutt claiming the school defamed him by claiming numerous alleged infractions happened during his tenure. Bjork said the appeal will be launched "right away".

And this, on the subject of institutional control in the Ole Miss athletic department: "The women's basketball and women's track and field violations also demonstrate that this institution failed to exercise control over its athletics program".

Ole Miss also was penalized by the NCAA with an additional loss of 13 football scholarships.

Ole Miss Chancellor Jeffrey S. Vitter believes the 2018 postseason ban was excessive. That means that any school that wants to hire him must meet with the NCAA infractions committee. The NCAA has levied further sanctions against the school's football program for a multi-layered recruiting scandal, according to a report from Steven Godfrey of SB Nation.

Bjork confirmed that rising seniors with the Rebels' football program can transfer to another university due to next season's bowl ban, but he said he was not aware of any players who plan to leave.

Bjork added that citing a rules violations case from more than 30 years ago "is not applicable to our current case". The university has 15 days to formally submit its intention to appeal to the NCAA, and the process is expected to take three to six months.

Every coach named in the investigation will receive a show-cause tag by the NCAA.

Among the penalties, Freeze was given a two-game conference suspension should he be hired before November 30, 2018.

Former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze will be suspended for two conference games during the 2018 season if he's employed as a head coach at another school.

The school also has been put on probation for three years and must vacate records of all regular-season and postseason wins in which ineligible student-athletes competed. The committee said it reviewed 53,000 pages of information related to the case. In addition to accepting our previously self-imposed sanctions, the committee has imposed a postseason ban for 2018.

Ole Miss went 6-6 this year and beat Mississippi State 31-28 in the Egg Bowl on Thanksgiving night.

The investigation spanned violations committed under both Freeze and former Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt, and spawned a dispute between Nutt and Ole Miss that inadvertently resulted in Freeze's downfall.
