Year's brightest supermoon coming to OR skies Sunday night

People watch the supermoon rising in Dar es Salaam

There will be a full moon on New Year's Day, and another at the very end of the month, on January 31.

Not only will the moon appear brighter and larger, but we will also see some of the biggest tides of the year (king tides).

In 2016 the moon was the closest its been to the Earth since 1984 and that distance won't be challenged again until 2034.

The moon will be at its brightest above the borough at around 4:47pm. Supermoons occur when the moon is full and closer to Earth than normal. The Moon takes about 27.32 days to orbit Earth.

So when will you be able to see the supermoon? (The point at which the moon is closest to Earth is known as the perigee.) Basically, what that means is it will look like the moon is particularly large and bright to viewers of the nightsky. It will officially reach perigee the next day, December 4, at 3:45 a.m. ET when it is 222,135 miles away from Earth - almost 16,000 miles closer than it normally is throughout the year, Space.com reports.

"The moon will reach its highest point above the horizon at midnight local time". Due to an effect called the Moon Illusion, it may appear bigger. It just won't be a full moon.

Guess what: It's supermoon time! This is also why both times are the best for watching the supermoon.

FOX 13 Chief Meteorologist Paul Dellegatto says, because it's so close to Earth, a super full moon looks about 7 percent bigger and about 16 percent brighter than an average full moon.

This supermoon won't be quite as special as last year's. Then adjust the exposure slider that appears next to your finger to get the right balance of light for your shot.

To get an original shot, Ingalls suggests taking a picture that puts the moon in context of a local landmark, something that gives your photo a sense of place.
