Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted over 200000 gun background checks on Black Friday

Background checks for guns purchases set Black Friday record

The previous single-day highs were 185,713 on Black Friday in 2016, and 185,345 in 2015.

The number of guns purchased is probably more than the number of background checks as many purchasers procure more than one firearm.

USA Today reports that the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) received 203,086 requests for background checks, a significant increase from the previous single-day record of 185,713 requests-set a year ago on Black Friday.

The tragedy recently prompted Attorney General Jeff Sessions to order an extensive review of the bureau's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), which allowed Air Force veteran Devin Kelley to purchase the firearms used in the massacre.

The two previous single-day records were also set on Black Fridays. As was the case, Federal Bureau of Investigation officials must know whether a person is eligible for a gun purchase within the three-day period for each check. And if the new record for single-day gun background checks set Friday is any indication, those retailers' efforts appear to have worked. "Spikes in gun sales regularly occur following mass shootings, often over concerns of increased gun regulation or because people are looking for increased protection", TIME reported.

Sessions cited the November 5 shooting at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, as proof that "relevant information may not be getting reported to the NICS".

"People should not be able to make their own assault weapons and other guns when those individuals are unsafe and legally barred from buying guns", Robyn Thomas, executive director of the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, told USA Today.

While gun sales have been surging in recent years - largely driven by fears of more restrictive gun laws proposed during the Obama administration - gun check numbers had leveled off in the first months of the pro-gun Trump administration.

While background checks are a requirement for any gun purchase made through a federally-licensed firearm dealer, they can't necessarily estimate the number of firearms actually sold.
