New Polar Satellite System To Bring More Accurate Weather Forecasts

Boulder's Ball Aerospace, NOAA primed for polar-orbiting satellite launch has been seven years in the planning

NASA develops and builds the instruments, spacecraft and ground system and launches the satellites for NOAA.

The booster will carry the first in a series of four satellites for the Joint Polar Satellite System, JPSS-1.

"It allows us to see smaller, better detail, smaller forest fires, know when they're starting and then allow, tell the decision makers and the responders how they need to respond and react", said Vanessa Griffin, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The Launch Configuration Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) measures the electromagnetic emissions and subjects it to expected electromagnetic radiation that the satellite would experience at the launch site.

Once the full system is in operation, JPSS will give meteorologists key weather information about hurricanes, floods, blizzards, and other extreme conditions.

While a geostationary satellite stays in one spot and frequently sends forecasters a picture of what's happening on earth, a polar satellite, like JPSS-1, zooms around and sends more detailed snapshots, just twice a day. Each will circle the globe 14 times a day, 50 minutes apart and provide full, global observations for US weather prediction. Instruments aboard polar-orbiting satellites, like ones aboard JPSS-1 and its preceding spacecraft, known as the Suomi-NPP, obtain data on the winds and moisture in the upper atmosphere.

Strong quake hits Iran-Iraq border, 13 dead
An quake of magnitude 7.2 has hit the border region between Iran and Iraq, the US Geological Survey ( USGS ) says. State TV said at least six people were killed and many others injured in the town of Qasr-e Shirin.

The new satellite will also deliver critical observations during severe weather events like hurricanes, tornadoes and blizzards and is created to help improve forecasts three-to-seven days ahead of a severe weather event.

A first-of-its-kind weather satellite will have to wait at least 24 hours to begin its mission for NOAA and NASA after a rocket issue prevented an attempted liftoff from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California today (Nov. 14). "JPSS will continue this trend". Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems built the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder and the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System instrument.

Polar satellites like the JPSS-1, which orbit the globe from pole-to-pole 14 times a day, are considered the backbone of the global observing system.

The event is for credentialed reporters only.
