DC Comics Editor Eddie Berganza Fired After Sexual Harassment Claims

Warner Bros and DC Entertainment have fired editor Eddie Berganza amid allegations of sexual misconduct.

Berganza was the top editor for some of DC's major comic titles and had daily interaction with writers, artists, and other editors.

Among the stories recounted in the BuzzFeed article is Liz Gehrlein Marsham's account that, within weeks of being hired as an editor at DC Comics, Berganza forcibly kissed her and attempted to grope her at a bar near DC's former New York City offices.

On Friday, BuzzFeed reported that two women said Berganza had engaged in such behavior more than a decade ago. Finally, DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson issued a statement indicating that Mr. Berganza has been let go. The incidents described allegedly took place years ago, but in the midst of a wave of sexual assault stories surrounding entertainment figures like Harvey Weinstein and Louis C.K., these women felt the time was right to come forward.

Cartoonist and editor Joan Hilty told BuzzFeed that at a staff party in the early 2000s, Berganza repeatedly and forcibly tried to kiss her, even after she told him no. Rumors of harassment had long followed Berganza. Berganza, who was up for a promotion to executive editor at the time, received that promotion anyway. "While we can not comment on specific personnel matters, DC takes allegations of discrimination and harassment very seriously, promptly investigates reports of misconduct and disciplines those who violate our standards and policies". In fact, Berganza's predatory behavior has reportedly been a topic of discussion around the comic book industry for years.

DC Comics has terminated editor Eddie Berganza following allegations of sexual harassment. "There will be a prompt and yet careful review into next steps as it relates to the allegations against him, and the concerns our talent, employees and fans have shared".

According to BuzzFeed, DC put out a statement insisting that they were "committed to eradicating harassment", echoing a similar sentiment they put out over the weekend.

DC was unmoved, and Berganza stayed in his role until Buzzfeed published its report.
