Morocco is qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation

2018 World Cup Qualifying Wrap 11 November 2017

Unbeaten Tunisia, who have been to four previous World Cup finals and were the first African country to win a game at the finals in 1978, were denied a fifth win in six group matches as Libya's goalkeeper Mohamed Nashnush made a number of key saves.

Morocco and Tunisia have joined Nigeria, Egypt, and Senegal as the African teams who will be playing in the World Cup this summer.

Tunisia secured the draw it needed, 0-0 at home against Libya, to qualify from Group A and edge out Congo.

Tunisia also booked their spot at Russian Federation 2018 with a tense 0-0 draw against Libya.

Nabil Dirar scored the first goal and Mehdi Benatia added a second one five minutes later.

The qualification of Morocco and Tunisia signaled an apparent shift in African soccer, giving North Africa three teams at the World Cup and more than any other region for the first time since 1986.

It is another achievement for Morocco's French coach Herve Renard, who famously won the Africa Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast in 2015.

And five minutes later Gbohouo was at fault again as he started to come for Mbark Boussoufa's corner into the box but then backtracked, allowing Medhi Benatia to volley home and double the lead. The Tunisians held on for the draw, though, and it turned out to be a precious point.

With second-place Democratic Republic of Congo netting twice in stoppage time to defeat Guinea 3-1 in Kinshasa, only one point separated the top two.

Immediately after Morocco's national team secured it qualification to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Moroccans of NY flocked to Steinway street in Astoria to celebrate this victory.
