Who Is Danica Roem? Virginia Elects First Openly Transgender State Legislator

That included the district 13 seat in Manassas, with Danica Roem slated to replace incumbent Bob Marshall and become the first openly transgender lawmaker to serve in state legislature. "This one's for you", Roem said to a crowd of cheering supporters.

Roem was open about her gender identity and had backing from LGBT groups. Instead, she focused on jobs, schools and, with particular fervor, northern Virginia's traffic congestion.

The hard-won victory came after she took on the ultra-conservative Republican incumbent Robert Marshall in Virginia's 13 House of Delegates district. He held that position for the past 25 years. "That was the primary factor in how I voted", said Roem's new constituent.

A lightning rod for controversy, Marshall often drew the ire of even his own party. In that time, Marshall wrote an anti-gay marriage amendment and sponsored Virginia's transgender bathroom bill (which infamously banned students from using the bathroom that corresponded to their gender identity and required administrators to out trans kids to their parents), as well as a ban on gay people serving in the National Guard-just lots and lots of very bad stuff.

On the campaign trail, Marshall and other Republicans repeatedly misidentified Roem's gender. She was a reporter at the Gainesville Times for 9 years (plus 2 months and 2 weeks, to be exact) before running for office, and also worked as a news editor for the Montgomery County Sentinel in Maryland. For 26 years I've been proud to fight for you, and fight for our future. "Though we all wish tonight would have turned out differently, I am deeply grateful for your support and effort over the years".

In 2010, he pitched a no-hitter for the Phillies in Game 1 of the National League Division Series against the Cincinnati Reds. Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies pitches against the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 5, 2012 in Pittsburgh.

There were plenty of reasons progressives were so overjoyed by the results in Tuesday night's elections.

Kaufusi replaces John Curtis, Provo's current mayor, who successfully ran for the US House seat that was left open when former congressman Jason Chaffetz resigned in June.

And Andrea Jenkins became the first openly trans woman of color elected to the city council of a major USA city when she was elected to represent Ward 8 of Minneapolis on Tuesday.

In a statement following Titus' win, Victory Fund President and CEO Aisha C. Moodie-Mills told PennLive that it was a "historic night for trans candidates" in the country, adding, "Tyler is part of a vanguard of leaders who are determined to be part of the conversation on issues that affect their lives".
