Russian Lawyer: Trump, Jr. Offered a Quid Pro Quo on Sanctions

In an interview with Bloomberg published Monday, attorney Natalia Veselnitskaya claims that Donald Trump Jr. suggested that a law imposing sanctions on high-profile Russians could be reviewed if his father was elected and also requested written evidence for her allegations about Hillary Clinton's campaign receiving illicit funds.

Veselnitskaya has claimed the tax information she was peddling at the Trump Tower meeting relates to the firm.

The Senate Judiciary Committee, which is probing foreign lobbyist assets registration issues, has given Veselnitskaya a list of questions it wants answered.

Glenn Simpson, a former Wall Street Journal reporter and co-founder of Fusion GPS, was with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya at a Manhattan federal courtroom just hours before the Trump Tower meeting on June 9, 2016, Fox News reported, citing a source.

"This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russian Federation and its government's support for Mr. Trump", Goldstone wrote in an email to Trump Jr.

The meeting took place after British publicist Rob Goldstone contacted Trump Jr. on behalf of Veselnitskaya to request it, describing her as a Russian government lawyer who had information and documents that would incriminate Clinton.

"The question is what the Russian lawyer understood Trump Jr.to mean during the conversation", Mariotti said. The law is a particular irritant to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who retaliated against its passage by barring Americans from adopting Russian children.

Veselnitskaya says she told the president's son she had information that Clinton's campaign may have received some of nearly $1 billion the wealthy Ziff brothers gained from Russian investments that allegedly evaded USA taxes.

The U.S. law targeting Russian Federation was called the Magnitsky law and was passed in response to Magnitsky's death.

The sanctions list originally targeted Russian officials involved in the case of lawyer Sergei Magnitsky who died in prison after uncovering a government corruption scheme.

Veselnitskaya said she went to the NY meeting to show Trump campaign officials that major Democratic donors had evaded US taxes and to lobby against the so-called Magnitsky law that punishes Russian officials for the murder of a Russian tax accountant who accused the Kremlin of corruption.

'That I definitely don't have!' she said.

"Looking ahead, if we come to power, we can return to this issue and think what to do about it", Trump Jr. said of the 2012 law, she recalled.

Ziff Brothers Investments has contributed to Republicans and Democrats since the 2012 election cycle, according to the non-partisan Center for Responsive Politics. Kushner left after a few minutes and Manafort appeared to have fallen asleep.

The 2012 US law named after him so incensed the Kremlin, officials there banned adoptions from Russian Federation to the U.S.in response.
