Page Tells Russia Probe He's `Biggest Embarrassment' to Trump

Graham Urges Sessions To Testify Again On Russia

Carter Page, a foreign policy adviser to Donald Trump as he ran for president a year ago, told campaign aides he had gained "incredible insights" from Russian lawmakers and "senior members" of President Vladimir Putin's administration when he made a trip to Moscow in the midst of the US election.

The testimony reveals new details about how Page kept people in the campaign informed about interactions he had with Russians, as well as more details about his Russian contacts beyond his encounter with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich during his July 2016 trip.

He also cited Trump's criticism of judges who rule against him and his efforts to limit immigration from Muslim-majority countries as threats to democracy, adding that Trump is attempting to undermine the ongoing probes into Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election.

In his July 2016 note, Page wrote that Dvorkovich had "expressed strong support for Mr. Trump and a desire to work together toward devising better solutions in response to a vast range of current global problems".

Page said Trump advisers were aware of his July trip to Russian Federation, including Gordon, Corey Lewandowski and Hope Hicks, who now serves as the White House communications director.

He has denied meeting with Sechin while there, but agrees it would have been "a great honor".

His appearance generated extra attention on Capitol Hill after the disclosure of a guilty plea by another Trump campaign foreign policy aide, George Papadopoulos. "I forget the exact date, but it was the Thursday night before I flew to Moscow to give my speech".

Page acknowledged that he received an email from Papadopoulos a year ago that made a reference to the professor.

In an exchange with California Democrat Adam Schiff, Page acknowledged that Baranov may have mentioned the sale but said that it only came up as a bit of information already in the news. Page also testified that he was aware of Papadopoulos' meeting with a professor with links to the Kremlin, even as he had been invited to Moscow by another professor with connections to the Russian government.

SHERIFF: Multiple deaths after church shooting near San Antonio
A man has opened fire in a Baptist church in the USA state of Texas, killing at least 20 people, according to authorities. Sutherland Springs is a town with a population of roughly 362, and is located 35 miles east of San Antonio.

Papadopoulos pleaded guilty in October to making false statements and "material omissions" to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about numerous communications he had with allies of the Russian government, according to a criminal statement unsealed last week. "It's important to remember that Carter Page and George Papadopoulos were peripheral members of a relatively peripheral advisory committee", he said.

He said he was unaware at the time that Papadopoulos was making similar proposals for Trump to travel to Russian Federation, though he acknowledged he had received some of Papadopoulos' emails about Russian Federation.

The two men had a brief interaction at the commencement ceremony, where Dvorkovich also spoke, Page said.

"The idea there was bearing in mind Barack Obama's speech as a candidate in Germany 2008", Page told House Intel of the May 2016 email he sent to Gordon and to fellow foreign policy adviser Walid Phares.

Confronted with his email, Page told the committee that he had not meant that he met with any officials but rather that he had learned of their views about the US election from local media and scholars. It was on that trip that he met with the Russian officials.

Trump has said he does not recall ever speaking to Page.

A USA intelligence source claimed in September 2016 that Page met with Sechin, who raised the issue of lifting those sanctions after the election.

Page told NBC News Monday night that some lawmakers are focusing on "irrelevant distractions".

However, near the end of his testimony he also mentioned that he had been warned against a January interview on MSNBC by then-White House strategist Steven Bannon for unknown reasons.
