FSU suspends all fraternities, sororities following death of a pledge

FSU student found dead after off-campus fraternity party

The suspension comes after the death of 20-year-old Pi Kapp pledge Andrew "Trey" Coffey on Thursday night and the arrest of a Phi Delta Theta after a police raid of the fraternity house this morning.

FSU President John Thrasher announced the suspension on Monday, according to the university's Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.

Tallahassee Police officials said there are indicators that alcohol may have been a factor but they're awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause of death.

All Pi Kappa Phi activity at FSU has been suspended in the wake of Coffey's death, and fraternity brothers have been directed to cooperate with a police investigation, the Democrat reports.

"For this suspension to end, there will need to be a new normal for Greek life at the university", he said. "They must participate in that culture".

Fan strips in end zone after Washington State scored against Stanford
In the last week's Thursday game, No. 20 Stanford was almost upended by Oregon State, still seeking its first conference win. Backup Tyler Hilinski threw for more than 500 yards last weekend, but his four interceptions helped Arizona win.

They will be allowed to remain as residents in their fraternity or sorority house and will have meal service.

Sophomore FSU student AnnaMaria Luciano lamented that her sorority's philanthropy was cancelled today after Thrasher's announcement.

Thrasher has also banned alcohol at all registered student organization events during the indefinite suspension. They also cannot have any organized participation in homecoming activities, which are scheduled for next week.

Paramedics say they found Coffey unresponsive when they arrived at an off-campus pledge party and were unable to revive him, but it's not clear yet what happened. He was given medical treatment at the scene, but died. The bottles collected were scattered on the porch of the home where the party took place.
