Roy Hodgson: 'I can not ask much more from Crystal Palace players'

Pochettino:

With Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm injured, the Argentine started against London rivals Palace and gave a good account of himself.

Roy Hodgson has stressed that he "can't ask much more" from the Crystal Palace players following their 1-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Mauricio Pochettino's side, fresh from beating European champions Real Madrid in midweek, found Palace a hard nut to crack at Wembley and could have been behind before Son curled in the victor midway through the second half.

Substitute goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga made three great saves while Palace's Wilfried Zaha missed an open goal when the game was at 0-0.

"Spurs' goal was a painful blow", Hodgson told reporters. It remains rooted to the bottom of the league, four points away from the nearest team.

Israel launches airstrikes in Syria, targets weapons factory

The main talking point in a quiet first half came when Harry Kane picked up a knock following a challenge from Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

The stand-in skipper was fine to continue, but remained a peripheral figure in the match, heading tamely over under a half-cleared cross that would not sit for a volley.

Two minutes later, Spurs were again thankful to the alert Gazzaniga, who made a reflex stop from Luka Milivojevic's header - and within moments of that save they had taken the lead.

Son was on hand to curl an exquisite left-footed effort into the corner of Julian Speroni's net after 64 minutes to ease any Spurs nerves.

Son ought to have brought up his 21st league goal for Spurs, dragging past the near post after deceiving Speroni one-on-one, and Gazzaniga had time for one final piece of assured play, nicking the ball off Ruben Loftus-Cheek to quell Palace's late attempts at a comeback.
