Deir Ezzor city declared fully liberated

Iraqi forces and members of the Hashed al Shaabi advance towards the city of al-Qaim in western Anbar province on the Syrian border as they fight against remnant pockets of Islamic State group jihadists

The province was once largely held by IS, though parts of Deir Ezzor city stayed under government control throughout the jihadist group's reign.

The jihadist group has lost much of the territory it once held in the province.

The SDF control several oil and gas fields in eastern Syria, which they seized from IS militants this year.

The areas on the eastern bank of Euphrates River are largely controlled by the USA -backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), who are advancing in that area against IS.

Syrian government forces and their pro-government allies first broke the militant group's siege of their part of the city in September and have been advancing against ISIS positions since then. It also comes as Iraqi forces and allied Shiite militiamen are chasing IS remnants inside the town of Qaim, on the Iraqi side of the border.

Qaim, about 320 kilometers (200 miles) west of Baghdad in the Euphrates River Valley, has been used by IS to move fighters and supplies between the two countries at the height of the caliphate, when IS held almost a third of both Iraq and Syria.

Deir al-Zour is witnessing two military operations against ISIS. The US-led coalition has said around 1,500 ISIS fighters are left in the area, which it expects to be the scene of the "last big fight" against the group in Iraq.

Deir Ezzor was also fully liberated on Friday, according to Syrian state media outlet SANA.
