Saudi Arabia intercepts missile targeting main airport

Yemen army thwarts Houthi attacks in Taiz, kills 40

Saudi Arabia has intercepted a ballistic missile from Yemen, reports say, after a loud explosion was heard near Riyadh airport. The missile was allegedly aimed at the King Khalid International Airport.

The Saudi-led coalition accused a regional state of providing material support to the Houthi rebels, saying the firing of a ballistic missile at Riyadh "threatens the security of the Kingdom and regional and worldwide security", according to a statement carried by Saudi state-TV al-Ekbariya.

"We have reports - eyewitnesses on the ground and video that hasn't been verified yet - of outgoing fire, which might well be air defence missile fire coming out of the airport".

Government forces repelled several attacks by Houthi rebels and allied forces of former president Ali Abdullah Saleh in the province over the past 24 hours, military spokesman Col. Abdul-Basit al-Bahr told Anadolu Agency.

"This is a very significant development".

Riyadh is around 620 miles north of the border with Yemen.

Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network now confirms that Watson's ACL is torn, bringing his rookie campaign to a close. Watson went down on a non-contact injury, while running a read-option play, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter .

This is the first time that a Houthi missile has come so close to a heavily populated area, and it appears to be the farthest that such a missile has reached inside Saudi Arabia.

The Saudis, who back Yemen's internationally recognised government, accuse the Houthis of starting the war.

Airstrikes later in the day targeted Yemen's capital Sanaa, causing homes to shake and breaking windows.

Earlier this week, a suspected airstrike by the Saudi-led coalition killed at least 29 people, including children, in northern Yemen.

Some, including the authors of a United Nations report, have accused the Saudis of causing devastation and the deaths of thousands, as a result of their involvement in the war.
