This Japanese company is offering nonsmokers extra vacation days

Smoking kills and may also reduce your holidays. Know Why

The Telegraph reports that Japanese companies are increasing efforts to protect employees from the impact of second-hand smoke, with Lawson Inc, an operator of 24-hour convenience stores, in June banning smoking in its head office and regional offices.

"You don't hear much about the two pack three pack a day smokers anymore", Billoni said, "because without being able to smoke all day long at work it's physically impossible to have that many cigarettes".

Despite the policy's recent introduction, 30 of the company's 120 employees have already taken advantage.

A Japanese company has figured out a unique way to turn the game - it has started offering employees a leave of six days if they stop taking cigarette breaks.

"We don't give punishment for smoking", said Piala spokesman Hirotaka Matsushima.

"But at the same time, it's true that smoking room conversations are mostly about work they exchange ideas and consult each other".

It's rewarding non-smokers with extra holiday days.

"Kal se pakka smoking bandh" is something every smoker has said in their lives at least once if not more but how many times have you actually followed through with it?

We wish that our bosses in India would take inspiration from them and give us a little extra incentive as well.

"I hope to encourage employees to quit smoking through incentives rather than penalties or coercion", he explained.

The World Health Organisation ranks Japan at the bottom of the list in anti-smoking regulations according to the type of public places entirely smoke-free and around 18 per cent of Japanese are believed to smoke. The figure is higher among males and older generations.

In Japan, about 1 to 5 adults smoke. After the offer was announced in September, four employees made a decision to give up smoking, the company said.

The same should be taken inspiration of by other countries too.

In Canada, where smoking laws are more stringent, smoking is still the leading preventable cause of disease and death in Canada and 5.2 million Canadians smoke, says Cunningham. India is leading at the 4 position in terms of the maximum cigarettes consumption.
