Qualcomm sues Apple for breach of software license contract

Apple looking beyond Qualcomm for smartphone components

Still, these results are a reflection of the toll that the legal battle between Qualcomm and Apple is taking. Qualcomm alleges in the latest suit that Apple failed to protect the chipmaker's software and isn't allowing an audit to review how the iPhone maker handles the software, an obligation that Qualcomm says is included in their contract.

The folks over at Bloomberg spotted the new lawsuit filing, which claims that Apple may have used its "unprecedented access" to Qualcomm code in order to help Intel develop a competing chip. The chipmaker also says that an Apple engineer who was working with a competitor (still probably Intel) requested protected information about data download tech. "Apple copied an Intel engineer in the email for information".

In another USA case, Qualcomm alleges that it has six patents developed in the past four years that improve battery life in mobile devices and that 'Apple uses these technologies in its devices but is not paying for them'.

Revenue from its Qualcomm CDMA Technologies (QCT) unit, which includes its chip business that supplies both Android smartphone makers and Apple, rose 13 percent to $4.65 billion.

Qualcomm has not alleged that Intel chips violate its patents but claims that the way Apple implements them in the iPhone does. In July, Qualcomm filed a complaint with the United States International Trade Commission alleging that Apple has infringed on six Qualcomm patents that "enabled important features and functions in iPhones". But, recent news reports from The Wall Street Journal suggest Apple are designing products which don't require Qualcomm components, which would free Apple from Qualcomm's influence.
