Pro-Trump Veteran on Fox News Lied About Being Navy SEAL

Pro-Trump war 'hero' interviewed on Fox News admits he faked his record

Introduced on the network October 8 as a former Navy SEAL who served in Vietnam and earned 22 commendations and two Purple Hearts, John Garofalo has since admitted to the Military Times that he greatly exaggerated his military credentials. He did not receive, as Fox News' Bryan Llenas breathlessly recounted, two Purple Hearts for his service.

In the segment, Garofalo spoke of his time in Vietnam as a Navy SEAL, but records show that while he was a member of the Navy for four years, he never served in Vietnam and was not a SEAL, according to the Military Times.

Why you gotta be so Purple Heart-less?

Fox News is having to retract a story this week after it was taken by a U.S. Navy veteran claiming to have served as a member of Navy SEAL. The first SEAL teams were created in the early 1960s, and few were deployed in the early years of the Vietnam War.

Sometimes, the network's lust for patriotic punditry is so powerful that its producers will put Leathery Military Men on the air without bothering to check and see whether they are actually Military Men.

"What I did I'm ashamed of, and I didn't mean to cause so much disgrace to the SEALs", Mr. Garofalo told the Navy Times.

"Fox News not withdrawing that story has drove me nutty", Shipley told Navy Times, according to the military news organization.

The segment was posted to the Fox New Facebook page and received 1.5 million views.

Gord Downie and The Tragically Hip perform to a crowd of over 9,900 fans at Budweiser Gardens August 8, 2016. The singer announced past year he had been diagnosed in December 2015 with terminal brain cancer.

Along with the statement posted on its website, the network said it planned to offer an on-air correction Friday.

This isn't the first time Fox welcomed a guest who lied about his background, The Hill reported.

He called Garofalo a hero in an interview. "We certainly hope maybe the president is listening". "Even though he showed us medals, Garofalo was not awarded two Purple Hearts or any of the other almost two dozen commendations he claimed to have received, except for the National Defense Service Medal", reads the statement.

"We apologize to our viewers, especially veterans and servicemen and women", Fox concluded. The SEALs don't even know you.

Garofalo also told him that he had been an imposter for a long time, Shipley said.

FNC says the network has spent the last two weeks working "with Garofalo's family and the National Personnel Records Center to get to the bottom of a military past that Garofalo had claimed to be covert".

"Guys do it for self-confidence reasons, or they have troubles in the past and compensate towards that by turning themselves into something respectable", Shipley said.
