Since the allegation about Weinstein came to light, McGowan has been using her Twitter account and the #RoseArmy hashtag to raise awareness and to offer support to other women making allegations against the producer. The company said she violated their terms of service by tweeting a phone number. Quite a few Twitter users noticed the company seems to have an exceptionally arbitrary and unclear policy on suspending accounts.

Rose McGowan returned to Twitter with a vengeance after a temporary suspension on Thursday, October 12, to publicly accuse Harvey Weinstein of rape.

A number of prominent women also objected to the fact that there wasn't as much public outcry when women of color were the ones being silenced.

The day of inaction has been called in protest at the "silencing" of female voices on the platform with Gallop leading the charge amidst heightened awareness of disparity between sexes in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment scandal. "We have been in touch with Ms. McGowan's team". Be the change you want to see in the world.

In subsequent tweets, she urges Bezos to stop funding "alleged [pedophiles] and sexual harassers" in the industry.

Heidi N. Moore, an editor and consultant who was among the first to adopt the boycott idea, told the Observer that it was meant to highlight the "appalling abuse" targeted at women on Twitter. Several women of colour have also pointed out that they have been experiencing and calling out harassment on and off Twitter for years, and that this kind of snap action in response to a high-profile white woman being banned does very little to support them.

The company's official account also tweeted: "We stand with the courageous women and men who use Twitter to share their stories, and will work hard every day to improve our processes to protect those voices".
