Girl Goes Missing After Father Sends Her Outside for Not Finishing Milk

Sherin Mathews

Neighbors and church members who arrived after an Amber Alert was issued on Saturday told KTVT little Sherin was adopted from India.

Wesley Mathews took his daughter, Sherin Mathews, outside at 3 a.m. Saturday to discipline her, the affidavit states.

However, her parents did not report her missing until 8 a.m., police said.

An Amber Alert has been issued, and, as per WFLA, she is believed to be in immediate and grave danger.

Sherin, who stands 36 inches tall and weighs about 22 pounds, is a special needs child with limited verbal communication.

Mathews was arrested Saturday on a charge of abandoning or endangering a child.

He posted bond and was released from jail on Sunday.

The Matthews' family waited almost five hours to report Sherin missing on Saturday morning, Sergeant Kevin Perlich stated, according to KING 5. Wesley Mathews told police that he told his daughter to stand next to a tree across the street from the Mathews backyard on the other side of the alley, even though coyotes were recently seen in the area.

Perlich said Sherin has not been found, and that the investigation continues in full swing Monday afternoon. He said the police are trying to "pick up any type of scent" or clothing items that might give law enforcement a lead to help find the toddler.

Police are looking for any evidence they can.

Sherin Mathews was last seen October 7 wearing a pink top and black pajama bottoms. She has brown eyes and black hair.

"That does not seem like a normal response that one would do if you have a missing child", Perlich said.
