Thousands demand that Spanish, Catalan leaders negotiate

Banco Sabadell relocates outside of Catalonia

Mr Vargas Llosa is also among 60 Spain-based intellectuals and academics who have signed an open letter asking the global community not to support the idea of external mediation as a solution to the crisis in Catalonia.

"I rule out absolutely nothing that is allowed for under the law", he said in an interview published in El Pais newspaper.

In Barcelona, people waved Spanish and Catalan flags and carried banners saying "Together we are stronger" and "Catalonia is Spain".

Catalan's separatist leaders pushing for the region's independence will come under more pressure on Sunday when thousands of people plan to take to the streets of Barcelona to demand the secessionists shelve their plans.

Some European officials are also anxious that any softening in Spain's stance towards Catalan independence could fuel secessionist feelings among other groups in Europe such as Belgium's Flemings and Italy's Lombards.

"Probably the reaction in Madrid will be the suspension of the Catalan autonomy". In particular, the Spanish federal government filed a complaint with the country's Constitutional Court over the Catalan government and parliament approving the law on the independence vote.

"Spain will continue being Spain".

In the referendum, turnout was around 43 percent but 90 percent voted in favor of independence, triggering pro-separatist Catalan government to say the northeastern region of Spain had won the right to statehood.

Almost 900 people were injured as the police, trying to enforce a Spanish court ban on the vote, attempted to disperse voters. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, meanwhile, refused to recognize the fact that a referendum took place as well as its results.

Iraq forces push into IS bastion Hawija
The town became the main stronghold of the terror group in the region after the Iraqi army regained control of Mosul in July. Hawija has been an insurgent bastion since soon after the US-led invasion of 2003.

The show of force by pro-union groups comes a week after the Catalan government went ahead and held a referendum on secession that Spain's top court had suspended and the Spanish government said was illegal.

The focus has shifted to Tuesday, when Puigdemont is set to address the regional parliament "to report on the current political situation".

The warnings by the business sector have coincided with the first calls from within Puigdemont's government to hold off on a declaration of independence.

On October 1, Catalonia held the independence referendum, which is not recognized by the Spanish authorities.

Another march, organised by the far right party Falange Espanola de las Jons in Salvador Dali Square in Madrid, saw protesters draping Spanish flags over themselves.

Another group called "Let's Talk" urged citizens to gather dressed in white in front of town halls, demanding dialogue to end the crisis under the slogan: "Spain is better than its leaders".

"We want Barcelona to once again be the capital of Spanish culture".

The demonstrator said it is hard to get hundreds of thousands of people out on the streets if a political party or major organization is not behind the call.

On Saturday, Rajoy said that the government would resist the declaration of independence and protect the country's unity and sovereignty taking all necessary steps causing as less harm as possible to achieve these goals.
