Arrested Rio chief had 16 gold bars

Carlos Arthur Nuzman

Estadão reports that federal authorities are indicting the two officials for corruption, money laundering and criminal organization. They claim that it has been at the heart of a misappropriation of U.S. $2 million to Lamine Diack, a former International Olympic Committee member of Senegal, who has helped secure votes for Rio de Janeiro in view of the 2009 election.

"Given the new facts, the International Olympic Committee ethics commission may consider provisional measures while respecting Mr Nuzman's right to be heard", it said in a statement. No charges have yet been laid.

According to the Federal Prosecutors' Office, the temporary arrest of Nuzman was necessary because the COB president attempted to hide property. "For example, he only declared 16 bars of gold, each weighing one kilogramme... on September 20, 2017, after the start of Operation Unfair Play".

The head of Brazil's Olympics committee has been detained for his alleged role in a bribery scheme to win the bid for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, a scandal that illustrates the multilayered nature of systematized graft in Brazil.

Nuzman, a 75-year-old lawyer, was also removed from the IOC's panel overseeing preparations for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Russia-Linked Facebook Ads Reportedly Aimed for Swing States
Since its disclosure, Facebook has faced questions and calls for increased USA regulation from US authorities. The ads were aimed at suppressing the votes and sowing discontent among the electorate, the sources said.

"(But) given the new facts, the International Olympic Committee ethics commission may consider provisional measures while respecting Mr Nuzman's right to be heard", it said, before adding "the presumption of innocence prevails".

The IOC added, "The provisional suspension may be lifted partly or fully when the governance issues of the [Brazil Olympic Committee] have been addressed to the satisfaction of the [IOC executive board]".

Earlier this year former Rio State Governor Sergio Cabral was jailed for 14 years after participating in the embezzlement of $64m (£49m) from construction contracts, including the renovation of Rio's Maracana stadium, where the 2016 opening and closing ceremonies were held.

The IOC asked the Brazilian authorities for more information about the case.

The IOC's reputation had already been badly tarnished by Rio 2016, even before these latest corruption allegations.
