Blade Runner 2049 Review: The Best Sequel Anyone Could Have Hoped For

WARNER BROS

The time has come and fans of Blade Runner can finally rejoice knowing that they'll get to see the continuation of the story they love. "It's a piece of art that's at flawless equilibrium, aesthetically and musically".

BOTTOM LINE A visually dazzling follow-up to one of science fiction's most iconic films. "Are you a fan of the original?" If "Blade Runner" was the nightmare of being soulless, "2049" is the dream of being real.

Wright, a steely actress seemingly born for the world of "Blade Runner", is speaking to her replicant detective, K (Ryan Gosling). The movie has excellent direction by Oscar-nominated director Denis Villeneuve, fantastic cinematography and a nicely connected storyline. "Blade Runner 2049" has a similarly appealingly murky vibe, but it is a bit more complex than "Arrival". For example, at the UGC ciné cité les Halles, Paris: The Meaning of the feast has nine daily sessions, compared with eight for Blade Runner 2049.

"Never seen it", Hammond shrugs. Certainly there's much of the same tiresome creation mythology and Christ-imagery, along with the throat-clearing monologues about angels and demons (here delivered by Jared Leto's crazy-eyed AI visionary).

Press tours can be grueling for actors, especially when you're Harrison Ford, who thinks "it's always better not to talk about" the film and to just "f-ing do it". Ford, who not long ago reprised another certain sci-fi icon from his past, shows he can still be versatile, not that this crusty Deckard seems all that different from Han Solo in his golden years. As to which of the eight versions (!) you should revisit - they being the Workprint, the U.S. Theatrical Cut, San Diego Sneak Preview Cut, the International Cut, the U.S. Broadcast Cut, the Director's Cut and the Final Cut - is entirely up to you (we probably recommend the latter), but do go back to maximise your experience of "2049". But that Elvis simulation is a striking metaphor for what the audience of BR2049 may be expecting - a careful recreation of a beloved pop culture artifact, one that's acquired the protective coating of "classic" in the many years since its initial, somewhat disreputable appearance. We guess that's what happens when whisky gets involved! He also skillfully combines the key elements of filmmaking - the most obvious one being the absolutely stunning cinematography by Roger Deakins, who has been nominated for 13 Academy Awards so far and makes a no-brainer case for his 14th here.

"But I'm curious, how did you feel around each other when you first met?"
