Within hours, the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack.

According to ARY News correspondent Moosa Baloch, a suicide attacker blew himself up outside the Dargah leaving a policeman dead and injuring a huge number of devotees at a time when the custodian of the shrine was holding a special meeting.

In February, a suicide blast on the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar had killed over 90 people and injured around 400.

District administration officials said that the death toll could rise as several injured people are in critical condition.

Sarfraz Bugti, the provincial home minister, said "terrorists have shown their inhumaneness by attacking innocent civilians" at the shrine.

The attack at Dargah Fatehpur in the Balochistan province also left more than a dozen people injured and comes months after similar bombings that targeted other shrines.

Kakar further added that the suicide bomber detonated his explosives outside the shrine soon after he was identified.

"A suicide bomber blew himself up after he was intercepted by police guards on duty outside the shrine, killing 18 people including three children under the age of 12 and two policemen, and wounding at least 27 others, 14 of them seriously", provincial home secretary Akbar Harifal told a news agency.

Local government official Ahmed Aziz Tarrar said 16 people were killed and over 30 wounded in the blast.

A greater push towards peace and development by authorities has reduced violence in recent years, but the remnants of militant groups are still able to carry out periodic attacks, particularly in the northwest.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi condemned the terrorist attack.
