One held as Canada probes 'act of terrorism'

Edmonton Police Service homicide detectives are investigating after a man's body was dug up from under a garage near 118 Avenue and 96 Street in north

A vehicle rammed a police blockade before a knifeman leapt out and stabbed a police officer in Edmonton in Canada.

The suspect, whose name wasn't released, was arrested after the attack on suspicion of attempted murder and various terrorism charges, police said.

An alleged set of terrorist attacks took place in Edmonton, Canada, Saturday night into early Sunday morning leaving four people and a police officer injured.

Knecht says the driver of the vehicle then got out and "viciously" stabbed the officer several times with a knife before fleeing.

Investigators say the truck driver appeared to deliberately try to hit pedestrians in crosswalks and alleys while attempting to evade police.

The officer involved in the stabbing was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Four pedestrians were injured; two have been discharged from the hospital, while two are under observation.

Police chief Rod Knecht said at a Sunday afternoon news conference that the man, who came to the attention of law enforcement in 2015 for "espousing extremist ideology" is believed to have acted alone.

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) says a 30-year-old Edmonton man has been arrested and is now in custody.

Police said the arrested individual had been known to authorities.

Degrand said he is a 30-year-old Somali national who was in the process of making a refugee claim in Canada.

A manhunt was underway when the suspect was pulled over at a police check stop on Wayne Gretzky Drive around three hours later driving a U-Haul. The suspect fled on foot, leaving a flag of the armed Islamic group in his vehicle, police confirmed. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called it a terror attack. The officer recognized the name on the driver's ID as matching that of the owner of the SUV used in the attack.

Bar manager Austin Elgie also saw the van zoom by with police giving chase.

He added that police "had no intelligence" that warranted keeping the suspect under further investigation.

"To the best of our knowledge, this was a lone-wolf attack", Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson said.

"We can not - and will not - let violent extremism take root in our communities", Mr Trudeau said.
