Stadium seats collapse, injuring 18 at French soccer match

Amiens vs Lille stadium stand collapse

Saturday night's Ligue 1 match between Amiens and Lille is abandoned after a barrier collapsed in the 15th minute of the fixture at the Stade de la Licorne.

At least 25 people have been hurt, four of them seriously, after a barrier collapsed at a football stadium in France.

The stadium, which holds 12,000 people, was evacuated after a security meeting.

Fode Ballo-Toure had given the visitors the lead and ran near the away section to celebrate when the barrier gave way.

"Police warned us that 200 very angry ultras were in the section reserved for Lille fans", Joannin said (via Sportskeeda.com).

A Lille fan who was at the match said: "It was really carnage".

"I wanted to say how unsafe it can be when supporters charge en masse in a matter of seconds towards a barrier and that they are also putting themselves in danger", he said.

Lille chief executive Marc Ingla responded on Twitter saying: "The statement from Amiens' president is irresponsible and inflammatory in the context of this situation". Our supporters are impeccable and professional football needs to be better organised.

"Lille hope that those responsible for this accident are swiftly identified, for the club's supporters and the victims".

Officials said the match would have to be stopped.
