Engine blowout forces Air France flight to divert to Newfoundland

Another said they heard a "loud thud and a lot of vibration" before looking out of the window at the horrific scene.

An Air France Airbus A380 was forced to divert to Goose Bay, Canada, earlier today while en route to Los Angeles after suffering a serious engine-failure event.

The plane managed to land successfully with the airline saying staff had responded "perfectly".

The Air France plane, which was reportedly flying from Paris to Los Angeles, had to make the unscheduled stop in Canada at around 5.30pm.

The aircraft landed safely in Goose Bay following the incident over the Atlantic.

The crew were able to conduct a visual examination and determined that the engine's cowling inlet had blown out.

"The Engine Alliance GP7000 is a turbofan jet engine manufactured by Engine Alliance".

Air France says the landing was due to a mechanical issue, reports and pictures of the aircraft show severe damage to one of the plane's engines. It is one of the powerplant options available for the Airbus A380, along with the Rolls-Royce Trent 900.

Debris scattered across the runway as the plane made its approach, requiring cleanup before the runway could reopen.
