UKIP set to unveil new leader amid resignation threats

Henry Bolton is a former army officer and policeman

Nigel Farage-backed candidate Henry Bolton elected new UKIP leader in shock result.

Ms Waters came second in the leadership contest, with 21.3% of the 12,915 votes cast.

Despite seeing June 2016's Brexit referendum ending in a decision to leave the European Union, the party has been dogged by infighting and resignations.

Henry Bolton, 54, a former Lib Dem candidate and father of three, won 30 per cent of the vote, beating a controversial anti-Islam candidate and other higher-profile Ukip figures.

Indeed, Mr Bolton had said that UKIP was in danger of becoming the "UK Nazi Party" if it plumped for Ms Waters (Ms Waters herself has vigorously denied this sort of claim).

He was endorsed by several Ukip MEPs and the former party leader Nigel Farage acted as his referee.

Revealing two options for a new logo for conference delegates to vote on Friday morning, party members opted for a design featuring a lion over a series of simplified shapes five to one, interim leader Steve Crowther announced.

"I would call on all of you, whether you voted for me or not, to please rally around the party and be united because without being united, we can not lead and hold the government to account and achieve our core goal".

Mr Bolton called on the party to unite behind him to allow him to deliver its aims. I do not see myself as being your leader, I see myself as serving this party. You are the party, not me.

"This party needs to serve its country".

UKIP was in search for its fourth leader in 12 months after Nuttall quit following the party's poor general election performance.

"He is a man of real substance", the former leader added.

Mr Farage's successor, Diane James, stepped down in October, just 18 days after being elected.
