Jeff Sessions defends Trump's criticism of National Football League protests

Demonstrators rally for the removal of a Confederate statue coined Silent Sam on the campus of the University of Chapel Hill

Attorney General Jeff Sessions spoke at Georgetown University, pointing to BSU as one of two examples of colleges he says are cracking down on free speech with their written policies.

"The university is about the search for truth, not the imposition of truth by a government censor", he said.

Our nation would be better off if more people, starting with the president, listened to those with different views and tried to understand their thinking - not dismiss them out of hand. "[Sessions] has proven himself over and over again to be against free speech, to be against justice, and today we take a knee". He then added, "it's not a contradiction".

Sessions told host Tucker Carlson that could even come in the form of a lawsuit against these institutions if they were to ignore efforts to fight against those institutions that limit the right to speak on public campuses.

Speaking with the Post, student Lauren Philips said she and the other affected students "find it extraordinarily hypocritical that AG Sessions would lecture future attorneys about the importance of free speech on campus while actively excluding the wider student body". "But it is transforming into an echo chamber of political correctness and homogeneous thought, a shelter for fragile egos".

"Is free speech dead?"

The Department of Justice will get more involved in free speech cases on college campuses, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Wednesday on "Fox and Friends".

The sense that Sessions might not be operating in good faith when he decried "safe spaces" deepened when more than 100 students had their invitations to the noon event revoked.

One protester, third-year law student Charlotte Berschback, complained on the sidelines of the protest that invitations to the Sessions speech had been withdrawn from students who had RSVPed and had initially been told they would have a seat.

Inside the auditorium, several audience members sat with black tape covering their mouths in protest as well.

"We want to speak out first of all and call on presidents, trustees, legislators, and donors to make sure their colleges aren't suffocating speech", Sessions said.

The result, he said, 'has spawned a cottage industry of protesters who have quickly learned that school administrators will capitulate to their demands'.

'Particularly on a college campus!

They also took issue with the Justice Department's prosecution of Desiree Fairooz, a member of the anti-war group Code Pink, who was arrested and later tried for laughing during Sessions' confirmation hearing.

Demonstrations broke out this week at the University of California, Berkeley, around a planned four-day conservative event dubbed Free Speech Week, which was suddenly canceled. "When the debaters attempted to move to a private broadcasting location, the protesters - many in masks, a common tactic also used by the detestable Ku Klux Klan - pulled fire alarms, surrounded the speakers, and began physically assaulting them".

Session responded to a question at Georgetown about the National Football League, saying, "It is a big mistake to protest in that fashion".

Meanwhile, hundreds of students and dozens of law professors protested the speech as well-standing outside the building with signs and chanting through bullhorns as Sessions spoke.
