Moscow:Appealing for an end to the escalating rhetoric between Washington and Pyongyang, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has likened the war of words between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to a kindergarten fight between children.
Wang said that the situation of North Korea is of utmost importance and is of common concern among the United Nations member countries.
He even raised concern over the Palestinian issue and said that the latter deserve just treatment and illegal settlements must be stopped.
In the weeks leading up to the UN General Assembly, Trump threatened to bring "fire and fury" down upon North Korea if it threatened the United States or its allies.
Wang reminded everyone that UN Security Council members "must hold an exemplary role" and stress "dialogue over confrontation". And in his address to the UN, Trump drew dismayed laughter and later, criticism for his declaration that if North Korea threatens the United States, he will "totally destroy" it.
The Chinese minister noted that during the "Six Party" talks between South Korea, China, the US, Russia, North Korea and Japan in 2005, the "US undertook to normalize relations with DPRK". It was a theme that Lavrov struck as well, presenting Russian Federation, which invaded and annexed Crimea in 2014, as a force for balance, stability and peace on the world stage.
Russia's foreign minister said Friday the downturn in relations with the United States began with the Obama administration's "small-hearted" and "revengeful" actions and has plummeted further because of "Russo-phobic hysteria". "That was mentioned by all the European countries that participated in the negotiations", he said.
Ri Yong Ho spoke to reporters in NY shortly after Kim Jong Un accused President Donald Trump of being "mentally deranged" and a "dotard" after Trump threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea in a speech to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.
Lavrov was asked whether he saw a link between the crisis in North Korea and Trump's threat to pull out of the 2015 agreement to cap Iran's nuclear program.
Lavrov used his speech at the assembly to criticize Washington for its unilateral sanctions, calling such steps taken outside of the Security Council "illegitimate" and arguing that they "undermine the collective nature of global efforts".
"If you simply condemn and threaten, then we're going to antagonize countries over whom we want to exert influence", said Lavrov, referring to Trump's comments. Ultimatums, he added, "never led to anything good". He went on to say that cyberspace should be prevented from being used to inflict economic damage or spread extremist propaganda.
