McCain won't 'in good conscience' vote for Graham-Cassidy bill

Donald Trump

"I can not in good conscience vote for the Graham-Cassidy proposal", McCain said.

"I believe we could do better working together, Republicans and Democrats, and have not yet really tried", McCain (R-Ariz.) said in a statement. John McCain's defection, the latest GOP effort to repeal Obamacare would likely result in an additional 21 million Americans without health insurance.

With Senator Rand Paul already a hard no - because the measure doesn't go far enough - all eyes turn to Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. But Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) has given every indication she would oppose it.

The AP story points out that with McCain voting no, that would leave Republicans with only 49 votes for the bill; they would need 50, plus Vice President Mike Pence to break a tie, in order to prevail.

The Graham-Cassidy bill would also repeal the individual and employer mandates.

"Committees of jurisdiction should mark up legislation with input from all committee members, and send their bill to the floor for debate and amendment", McCain added. "I know Graham-Cassidy-Heller-Johnson is the best chance to repeal and replace Obamacare".

For his part, Graham issued a statement on Friday saying his friendship with McCain "is not based on how he votes but respect for how he's lived his life and the person he is". "They're against it. We haven't seen this many people come forward to speak out against a bill since Cosby".

While Republican response to McCain's announcement was muted Friday, Obamacare supporters were quick to praise the senator for his decision.

The proposal goes even further in its impacts to Medicaid, capping and curtailing spending, said Couture, who oversees Providence hospitals in Eastern Washington and Montana. His opposition likely leaves the bill at least one vote short of the support needed for passage.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal speaks at the Southwest Community Health Center his opposition to a Republican-backed bill to scrap Obamacare.

Those have been put on hold, but if Republicans can't pass a bill in the Senate by the end of the week bipartisan efforts could pick up again.

Republicans have struggled for months to reach consensus on health care legislation, having fumbled their attempts to pass bills on several occasions in the upper chamber.

"McCain's decision probably kills the bill because it's hard to see Collins supporting it", Jennifer Duffy, senior editor of the Cook Political Report, said in an email Friday. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) and Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.), would affect Medicaid, costs and people with preexisting medical conditions. "McCain has rightly noted", Brad Woodhouse, campaign director for Protect Our Care in Arizona, said in a statement.

"I know Rand Paul and I think he may find a way to get there for the good of the Party!"

Graham-Cassidy would cut access to services for millions of women and men by eliminating federal funds for Planned Parenthood, which provides people with preventive care, including birth control, cancer screenings, and STD testing and treatment.
