Aaron Hernandez Had Advanced CTE

BU Study Shows Extent of CTE in NFL Players

CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy, is a degenerative brain condition linked to depression and violent outbursts that is commonly found in athletes involved in contact sports who suffer repeated head injuries.

Researchers from the university announced in July the results from a study of 202 brains of former football players of varying levels.

Attorney Jose Baez said that Boston University scientists said that he had one of the most severe cases of the neurological impairment CTE that they have ever seen. Hernandez was 27 when he died.

In 2015, Hernandez was sentenced to life-without-parole for the 2013 murder of his friend, Odin L. Lloyd. Baez also said Hernandez's family has filed a lawsuit on behalf of his daughter against the National Football League and Hernandez's former team, the New England Patriots. Hernandez is one of several players who have been found to have had CTE after committing suicide, a list that includes Junior Seau, Jovan Belcher and Andre Waters. Prior to his suicide, Hernandez had been acquitted of double murder charges.

CTE is a rare disease that was discovered in 2002 by Dr. Bennet Omalu in the brain of the late Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Famer Mike Webster. He was drafted by the New England Patriots in 2010.

The NFL and New England Patriots did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Baez said he has filed a lawsuit in federal court against the Patriots and the N.F.L. on behalf of Hernandez's daughter.

The Hernandez case is bound to reignite controversy over youth football and concussion. Brain was studied at Boston University.

Filed in MA on behalf of their daughter, Avielle, Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez claimed the controversial athlete suffered from "stage 3 CTE usually seen in players with a median age of death of 67 years".

Lockhart did not have a definitive answer when asked if Hernandez was part of the existing $1 billion CTE settlement.
