Spanish police storm Catalan govt buildings to stop independence referendum

The mayor of Mollerussa Marc Solsona leaves legal headquarters in Catalonia

Opinion polls show Catalonia's roughly 7.5 million residents are divided on independence.

In central Barcelona, police said close to 4,000 protesters gathered near Jove's office, many draped in red and yellow Catalan flags, chanting "Independence!" and "We will vote!".

Spain's Civil Guard raided Catalan government offices including the economy and social affairs departments and a data center as Madrid moved to shut down preparations for an illegal referendum planned for October 1.

On Tuesday, officers seized a trove of documents related to the independence referendum from the offices of Unipost, a private delivery company, in Terrasa, a city near Barcelona.

"Primavera Sound can not and does not want to keep quiet about the events that have taken place over the past few days in Catalonia and especially what has taken place today in Barcelona, the city which hosts the festival", reads a statement from Primavera Sound, issued this afternoon.

The text adds that the sport club "from its top respect for plurality of its social mass, will continue supporting the will of the majority of the Catalonian people, expressed always in a civic, peaceful and exemplary manner".

In a television address, Catalan's President Carles Puigdemont said: "The Spanish state has by all rights intervened in Catalonia's government and has established emergency rule".

It's all kicking off in Catalonia, the northeastern region of Spain that's preparing for a referendum on its independence at the start of October. Anger over the detention of 14 regional government officials on September 20 was further compounded by an announcement that police had seized "close to 10 million ballot papers" destined for a vote deemed illegal by Madrid and the courts.

A referendum on Scottish independence from the rest of Britain was held in 2014, but voters rejected their call by 55 percent to 45 percent.

Puigdemont also says that the central authorities moves amount to a "de facto" suspension of Catalonia's self-rule. The decision came after Catalan officials failed to voluntarily agree to the controls.

Responding to the Scottish government's statement, a spokesman for Spain's ministry of foreign affairs told BuzzFeed News on Wednesday that it was impossible for the country to follow the Scottish example under its constitution.

A senior Catalan politician - Joseph Maria Jove, number two to Catalan Vice President Oriol Junqueras - was also detained, according to Spanish daily El Mundo. Spain's government has been backed by the Constitutional Court, which has suspended the referendum law passed by the Catalan parliament.

The stand-off between Catalonia and the central government resonates beyond Spain.

Sturgeon said the Edinburgh Agreement, drawn up by the Scottish and United Kingdom governments before the 2014 independence referendum in Scotland, could act as a template for others.
