Strong quake shakes Mexico, damaging buildings and causing panic

A 3.8 magnitude quake rattled parts of southern IL early Tuesday.

A strong quake has rocked the capital of Mexico, rattling buildings on Tuesday (local time).

State of Mexico Governor Alfredo Del Mazo said the death toll in his state had risen to at least 5 people, from initial reports of two deaths.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter was about 3.6 miles (6 kilometers) northwest of the Westwood neighborhood, home to the University of California, Los Angeles.

Officials were running quake drills earlier in the day.

While no injuries or damage has been reported yet, celebrities were vocal about the shaking on Twitter.

The latest quake comes 11 days after a huge temblor killed 96 people.

The race to rescue those trapped in the rubble is ongoing after Mexican media broadcast images of several collapsed buildings in heavily populated parts of the city. Lopez said she witness glass blow out of the windows of a few buildings.

At 1 pm Tuesday Sept. 19, an quake with an intensity of 6.8 points in the Richter scale was recorded, in Mexico City, with the epicenter located seven kilometers west of Chiautla de Tapia.
