Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi addresses Rohingya crisis

EXODUS Rohingya Muslims walk to the shore after arriving on a boat from Myanmar to Bangladesh

Aung San Suu Kyi, the celebrated de facto leader of Myanmar, has come under harsh global criticism for failing to speak out against the violence.

"We are deeply sorry for the suffering of all those who are caught in the trap of this conflict", said the Nobel Peace prize, referring to civilians who have fled en masse to Bangladesh, but also buddhists who fled their villages.

At its March session, the council agreed to "dispatch urgently" a fact-finding mission to look into alleged human rights violations and abuses by the military and security forces, particularly in Rakhine state where many Rohingya live.

"We are prepared to start the verification process at any time", Suu Kyi told diplomats gathered in the capital Naypyidaw in a nationally televised speech in English.

In her 30-minute address, the defacto head of the Myanmar government asserted that her regime - which is under stern criticism from the global community and rights groups for its inability to rein in atrocities on the Rohingya Muslims and perceived complicity in perpetrating it - was "open to worldwide scrutiny".

At least 250 people rallied on Parliament Hill on Sunday to demand the Canadian government do more than use their words to call for an end to the atrocities committed against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. "Hate and fear are main scourges", says Aung San Suu Kyi.

Vikram Mishri, India's Ambassador to Myanmar, said Suu Kyi's address was "encouraging" and contained a "very positive message". She said that during the ministerial meeting in NY there "was unanimity in the view that the violence must end and that there be a ceasefire".

Meanwhile, United Nations investigators on Tuesday said they needed "full and unfettered access" to Myanmar to assess the situation prevailing in the country, reported AFP.

Suu Kyi claimed that the majority of Rohingya villages had not been affected by violence.

The violence erupted in late August when the army retaliated against co-ordinated attacks by Rohingya militants.

"We have invited (former UN Secretary General) Dr Kofi Annan to lead a commission that would help us resolve long-standing problems", she said. We want to find out why the exodus is happening.

Marzuki Darusman decried stepped-up violence in Myanmar over the last month that has caused more than 400,000 people to flee, and asked the United Nations -backed Human Rights Council for a six-month extension until next September for his team's first written report.

Ms Suu Kyi said: "We condemn all human rights violations and unlawful violence".

Although India has traditionally received refugees with open arms, the centre has called for the expulsion of Rohingya refugees, terming them as a threat to the nation.

There have been allegations and counter allegations, will listen to all.
