PM Modi inaugurates Sardar Sarovar Dam in Gujarat

People protest against displacement by the Sardar Sarovar Dam project

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who celebrates his 67th birthday today, inaugurated and dedicated to the nation the Sardar Sarovar Dam, in Kevadia, Gujarat, almost six decades after its foundation stone was laid.

Modi, who turned 67 today, unveiled the plaque dedicating the dam to the nation, after performing a puja at the site in the Narmada district.

The dam's construction began in 1987, although the project dates back to 1961 when Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India, laid down the first stone for the foundation.

According to the SSP official, the power generated from the dam would be shared among three states - Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

It said the "so-called development project" comes at an immeasurable cost when considered in terms of the dislocation and debasement caused to countless men, women and children, their hearths and homes, besides the destruction of forests, biodiversity and ecosystems.

"As you know that it's not in my nature to think or do anything on a small scale. That is why we had made a decision to build this 182 metre tall statue".

In his address to a gathering of farmers and villagers from different districts of the State, Modi recalled that when the World Bank denied funds for the project, religious leaders and temples came forward to fund it. "Imagine his vision that he envisioned this dam to help farmers and citizens", Modi said while adding that even as the project faced several hurdles, his government was determined to continue with the project, ANI said. In this context, Modi said he would live for people's dreams and would die for their dreams.

"The western part of India lacks adequate water supply, while in the eastern part there is shortage of electricity and gas supply".

Besides Gujarat, the Narmada canal will also irrigate 2,46,000 hectares of land in the desert districts of Barmer and Jalore of Rajasthan. Gujarat is expected to get 16 percent share, Madhya Pradesh 27 percent and the remaining 57 percent will go to Maharashtra.

Modi said his government wanted to build museums in all states where tribals fought for independence between 1857 and 1947.

Earlier, the height of the dam was 121.92 metres.

The project has since undergone several upheavals before seeing light of the day 56 years later.

Other activists also questioned the benefits of the project.
