California affordable housing bills clear Assembly

California Could Become First State to Ban Puppy Mills

The bill goes now to Democratic Governor Jerry Brown for his signature.

California is poised to become a so-called "sanctuary state" after its legislature passed a bill Saturday that would establish new protections for people who are in the country illegally and send a clear signal of defiance against the Trump administration's tough approach to immigration enforcement.

The Assembly's 49-25 vote sets up a vote in the Senate later Friday.

The bill will prohibit additional jail time meant to allow immigration enforcement officials to take undocumented immigrants arrested for other reasons into custody.

"Given their limited resources, I agree that state and local law enforcement should not be doing the jobs of federal immigration agents", said Bates. The legislation would also permit police and sheriffs to share information and transfer people to immigration authorities if they have been convicted of one or more crimes from a list of 800 outlined in a previous law, the California Trust Act.

The legislation is the latest effort by Democratic lawmakers in California to create barriers for President Donald Trump's campaign pledge to step up deportation efforts.

Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon, D-Los Angeles, introduced SB54 shortly after Trump's election to cut off most interactions between federal immigration agents and local police and sheriff's officers.

Four years became thirteen, as Cassini continuously exceeded expectations and NASA kept discovering new tasks for the probe. The engineers would work hard to get the spacecraft back on its feet, but Staab said the process would take 10 to 12 hours.

On the Senate floor minutes before 2 a.m. Saturday, De Leon said the changes were reasonable, and reflected a powerful compromise between law enforcement officials and advocates.

The Republican minority in the Legislature opposed the bill.

Both bills would also make it illegal for anyone to dump cigar or cigarettes at state beaches or parks.

Brown has backed the bill and is expected to sign it into law, despite the Trump Administration rejection of sanctuary cities and states.

"The time for political posturing is over, guys", said Assemblyman James Gallagher, R-Yuba City.

The California Assembly has approved a multi-bill package to address the state's affordable housing crunch.

IL recently passed even more protective legislation that bars law enforcement from detaining immigrants exclusively for deportation, said Shiu Ming Cheer, senior staff attorney at the National Immigration Law Center.
