Syrian government forces recently broke the extremist group's three-year siege on Deir al-Zor as troops advanced on the western side of the city. The Hezbollah-negotiated deal allowed the evacuation in exchange for locating the remains of Lebanese soldiers and the release of fighters. One surviving Hezbollah fighter was returned to Lebanon Thursday.

The convoy was stranded in the desert for about two weeks, even though reports claim that some of the vehicles were able to slip into the militant-held territory. The U.S. said it did not strike the convoy itself because of the presence of civilians.
