Syrian army gears up for new push against Islamic State in Deir Ezzor

The Syrian troops are completing the defeat of the Islamic State terror group (IS, outlawed in Russia), which blocked Deir ez-Zor's northern and southern neighborhoods, the Russian military group's Chief of Staff, Lieutenant-General Alexander Lapin, told reporters on Tuesday.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has welcomed Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu to capital Damascus as Syrian forces supported by the Russian army prepare to make a final push into parts of the eastern city of Deir Az Zor.

The statement, published by the SDF's media council, announced the establishment of "a preparatory committee that will discuss the basis and starting points for a civil council for Deir Ezzor".

Earlier, the monitor reported Russian air strikes hit a cluster of tents on the western banks of the Euphrates river, killing "16 civilians including five children", according to the Observatory's director Rami Abdel Rahman.

THE Syrian army was poised to strike across the Euphrates river yesterday in its race to reach the Iraqi border before US-backed Kurdish forces.

More than 330,000 people have been killed in Syria since the conflict began in March 2011 with anti-government protests.
