PETA, Photographer Reach Settlement in Monkey Selfie Lawsuit

In a joint statement from Slater and PETA, the two parties agreed that the case raised "important, cutting-edge issues about expanding legal rights for non-human animals", a goal they "both support".

Both sides also asked the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals "to dismiss the case and throw out a lower-court decision that said animals can not own copyrights", The Associated Press reports.

Mr Slater enjoyed a legal victory previous year when a judge ruled that an animal can not own his photo copyright - but the case had been continuing through the USA courts system.

When asked what lessons he learned from litigating this case, Slater's attorney Andrew Dhuey said: "I learned that David Slater is a fantastic person who cares deeply about all animals, and particularly crested macaques". His lawyer, Andrew Dhuey, was not immediately available for comment. He also said interest in the image had already helped animals in Indonesia.

He also previously claimed that PETA had the wrong macaque, alleging that Naruto was the wrong age and gender for the monkey in the photo.

Suleiman said. "You know PMB has not really been in the country this year; he might have reshuffled before now". By nature and character, she is not the type to divulge sensitive information", Mr.

PETA was represented by Irell & Manella partner David Schwarz. Slater and Blurb persuaded U.S. District Judge William Orrick of the Northern District of California that animals have no standing to assert copyright authorship under Ninth Circuit law.

According to court documents, Naruto took the photographer's camera while he was on assignment in Indonesia and snapped the picture himself.

An American judge later decided that the monkey doesn't own the photograph. The ninth Circuit was thinking about Peta's allure. Being identified in the book as the copyright owner of the selfies, Slater asked Wikipedia and Techdirt to stop using the photos without his permission.

In an unusual hearing in San Francisco, legal advisors contended whether a monkey could guarantee copyright as well as whether Naruto was even the right monkey.

There was no immediate ruling from the 9th Circuit on the dismissal.
