Myanmar situation 'textbook example of ethnic cleansing', says UN

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama

Earlier on Monday, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein called on the Myanmar government to end the "brutal security operation" in the country's Muslim-populated areas.

He cited reports that Myanmar authorities had begun to lay landmines along the border with Bangladesh and would require returnees to provide "proof of citizenship".

The Rohingya are reviled in Myanmar, where the roughly one million-strong community are accused of being illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.

A further 27,000 ethnic Rakhine Buddhists as well as Hindus have also fled violence that has gripped the northern part of the state.

Turkey launched a new aid campaign Monday for Rohingya Muslims who have sought refuge in neighboring Bangladesh amid new waves of violence in Myanmar, in an effort to move beyond condemnation messages and take concrete humanitarian steps in the ongoing tragedy.

"ARSA strongly encourages all concerned humanitarian actors resume their humanitarian assistance to all victims of the humanitarian crisis, irrespective of ethnic or religious background during the ceasefire period", the group said in a statement.

He called it a "complete denial of reality" that hurts the standing of Myanmar, a country that had until recently - by opening up politics to civilian control - enjoyed "immense good will".

The new arrivals have reported widespread killing by security forces and Buddhist mobs, with homes looted and whole villages razed.

Worldwide aid programmes in Rakhine have been severely curtailed, as the fighting tore through parts of the state.

Thousands are arriving in Bangladesh each day, joining already overcrowded camps of Rohingya who have fled Myanmar over decades of troubles.

The estimate came from Joseph Tripura, a spokesman for the United Nations refugee agency.

Aid agencies have been overwhelmed by the influx of Rohingya, many of whom are arriving hungry and traumatized after walking days through jungles or packing into rickety wooden boats in search of safety in Bangladesh. Burma has one of the few armies, along with North Korea and Syria, which has openly used anti-personnel land mines in recent years, according to Amnesty.

"We went to all the camps but there was no place to stay".

Later, the foreign secretary in a media briefing said the foreign diplomats expressed concerns over the present humanitarian crisis created following the exodus of thousands of Rohingyas and assured Bangladesh to stay beside it in this regard.

More than 270,000 people had fled to Bangladesh amid reports of the burning of villages and extrajudicial killings. He mentioned that the 1992 agreement recognised Rohingyas as "members of Myanmar society".

The Myanmar government said 421 people had died. Hafez Ahmed, 60, told AFP.

It remains unclear when or whether they will be able to return.

"How can we live like this here?" he added, gesturing to the swampy earth.

Myanmar says its security forces are carrying out clearance operations to defend against ARSA, which the government has declared a terrorist organisation.

Myanmar's army says at least 400 people, mainly militants, have been killed in the violence.

The violence and exodus began on August 25 when Rohingya insurgents attacked Myanmar police and paramilitary posts in what they said was an effort to protect their ethnic minority from persecution by security forces in the majority Buddhist country.
