Huge crane atop Downtown Miami high-rise collapses in Irma's winds

Irma, however, is expected to restrengthen a little while it moves through the Straits of Florida.

Miami's emergency management director, Pete Gomez, said conditions remain unsafe and replacement crews will not be coming in until the weather improves.

As Miami was hammered by tropical storm force winds and the occasional hurricane force gust generated by Hurricane Irma, the booms of two tower cranes in the city came down Sunday.

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration will investigate, Miami officials said in a statement.

"At the moment, the water on the bay has completely left, so it just looks like ... a mud pile just everywhere all over, and what they're all saying is that's all going to flood Miami, but then it's going to surge back", he said.

The cranes were constructed to take winds speeds up to around 145 miles per hour.

"Streets have to be closed, another crane has to be brought in", he said.

"It takes five to six days per crane, and they can be up to 900 feet tall and include 10,000-pound counterweights", WLRN reports.

Irma's Winds Buckle Three Giant Cranes In South Florida

As Hurricane Irma continues to wreak havoc toward northern Florida, its floodwaters have inundated the streets of Miami, making the city completely unrecognizable.

"We've got to follow our protocol", he said. "It will be done by wind-blown debris".

Hurricane Irma made landfall in the Florida Keys on Sunday morning as a Category 4 storm.

The major exception, Whiteman said, is if a tornado forms, which "virtually nothing" would be able to withstand.

The Miami waterfront, as well as the islands that make up the city, are used to flooding because much of the city is low lying and facing rising sea levels.

If the house starts shaking and they fear the wind is ripping off the roof, there's a crawl space under the home as a last resort. The tweet concludes: "Actually it's insulation from a high rise under construction".

Carl Roberts has Chinese food, a case of water and a million-dollar view in his 17th floor Gulf front condo - all he needs, he says, to weather the massive storm coming straight at him.
