USA retaliates against Russian Federation by giving diplomats the boot from major cities

Moscow ordered a reduction in US diplomatic staff by September 1.

According to the official, Russian Embassy personnel, together with the State Department officials, walked through three properties in San Francisco, New York and Washington, DC that the Russian government was required to close.

President Trump had not promised to retaliate for the expulsion of US diplomatic staff from the country, but instead thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin after the order came down from Moscow.

The order affects the Russian Consulate General in San Francisco and diplomatic annex buildings in both New York City and Washington, D.C. The State Department wants them closed by September 2. "These closures will need to be accomplished by September 2", State Department Spokeswoman Heather Naurt said Thursday.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson gave Lavrov the order Thursday, telling him the closures needed to happen by Saturday.

US officials have ordered Russian Federation to close three diplomatic buildings in the United States, part of the ongoing quarrel between the two countries over USA sanctions.

The facilities to close are a San Francisco consulate, annexes in Washington and NY. She said the two annexes ordered closed in Washington and NY were primarily trade missions.

Lavrov defended Russia's decision to cut US diplomatic staff as reciprocal reaction to the USA expelling Russian diplomats last December.

Earlier in the day, he said Moscow has yet to study the USA decision that came in late at night on Thursday to decide how to react.

No Russian diplomats working at the missions are being formally expelled by the US, and those employees can continue their work at other Russian facilities in the country. "They sought to rupture Russian-US relations and prevent US President Donald Trump from putting forward any constructive proposals", the Russian top diplomat stressed.

Last month, Congress passed additional sanctions against Russian Federation.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the order to cut USA staff by Moscow was "unwarranted and detrimental to the overall relationship between our countries". A State Department official said they would have "sufficient time" to pack their things and move out.
