Pittsburgh Steelers acquisition of JJ Wilcox smartest trade yet

Bernard Reedy had a 10-yard touchdown reception against the Redskins to add to his splashy kick and punt returns this preseason

According to Jenna Laine of ESPN.com, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter the Buccaneers sent Wilcox and a 2019 seventh-round pick to the Steelers in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2018 draft to make space for Ward. A day later, the Steelers signed cornerback Joe Haden hours after he was released by Cleveland. Wilcox was a 2013 third-round pick out of Georgia Southern.

The good news is with the Buccaneers' recent move, Martin will have the opportunity to do just that when he returns from his suspension in Week 4, and the Bucs are certainly hoping that banking on his ability to return and establish an explosive running game this season will ultimately become a reality and work out in their favor this year.

Wilcox came into the National Football League as a third-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in 2013 and spent his entire career with the club until the Buccaneers signed him to a two-year, $6.25 million contract in the offseason. The Steelers now have just two healthy safeties, Sean Davis and Robert Golden on their roster.

An soft-tissue leg injury suffered on July 30 kept him out for the entire preseason.

Wilcox finished last season with 53 tackles, seven pass breakups and one interception.

Pittsburgh acquiring Wilcox gives the team 54 active roster players, plus Le'Veon Bell, who does not count against the roster until he signs his franchise tag tender.

In addition to the trade for Wilcox, the Steelers signed 10 players to their practice squad: center Kyle Friend, tight end Jake McGee, running back Fitzgerald Toussaint, wide receivers Marcus Tucker and Justin Thomas, linebacker Matt Galambos, safety Jacob Hagen, defensive end Lavon Hooks, linebacker Farrington Huguenin and cornerback Dashaun Phillips.
