Trapped bakers in Houston make pan dulce for flood victims

Rising to the occasion: Trapped at work, bakers help feed Harvey victims bread

When faced with the prospect of being trapped inside their bakery all weekend, these bakers chose to do what they do every day: They baked bread.

The bakery shared an image Monday of some of its workers posing with their baked creations.

Bakery staff left stranded in their store by Hurricane Harvey put their time trapped inside to good use - baking all night to make bread to hand out to those in need.

"When they realized they were stuck, they chose to keep themselves busy and help the community and made as many loaves of bread as they could", manager Brian Alvarado told The Independent. Some have hailed the bakers as "heroes" and commended their "great community service".

For those unable to go to the store and buy bread, the bakery packaged up plenty of pan dulce and donated to people in need.

In response to a comment on its post, the bakery told one of its followers that the owner is in "an old jeep just trying to get where he can with the bakers in the back". The reason these Good Samaritans were able to bake at such a insane clip is because they were also trapped inside their building by floodwaters. Luckily, inside, the bakery was still dry and the power remained on.

The bakery shared a photo of the four men on its Facebook page, which has since gone viral with over 3,500 shares and more than 5,000 likes. "By the time the owner managed to get to them, they had made so much bread that we took the loaves to loads of emergency centers across the city for people affected by the floods".

Over the course of two days, the four workers used almost 4,400 pounds of flour to crank out hundreds of loaves and sheets of pan dulce. And we aren't just talking about a few loaves.
